Theodore Frelinghuysen

Theodore Frelinghuysen, born on March twenty-eighth, seventeen eighty-seven, was a prominent American politician and lawyer who made significant contributions to New Jersey's political landscape. He began his legal career in Newark after graduating from the College of New Jersey, establishing a reputation that would pave the way for his future in public service.

Frelinghuysen served as New Jersey's Attorney General from eighteen seventeen to eighteen twenty-nine, showcasing his legal expertise and commitment to justice. His political career advanced when he was elected to the United States Senate, where he served from eighteen twenty-nine to eighteen thirty-five. Notably, he was a staunch opponent of President Andrew Jackson's Indian removal policy, advocating for the rights of Native Americans during a tumultuous period in American history.

In addition to his Senate duties, Frelinghuysen held the position of Mayor of Newark from eighteen thirty-seven to eighteen thirty-eight. His influence extended beyond politics; he was also involved in academia, serving as president of New York University from eighteen thirty-nine to eighteen fifty and later as president of Rutgers College from eighteen fifty to eighteen sixty-two.

Frelinghuysen's political journey reached a notable peak when he was selected as the Whig vice presidential nominee alongside Henry Clay in the election of eighteen forty-four. Although the Whig ticket faced a narrow defeat against the Democrats, Frelinghuysen's legacy continued to grow, culminating in the naming of Frelinghuysen Township, New Jersey, in his honor upon its incorporation in eighteen forty-eight.
