Theodore McCarrick

Theodore McCarrick, born on July seventh, nineteen thirty, was an influential American theologian and Catholic prelate. He was ordained a priest in nineteen fifty-eight and quickly rose through the ranks of the Catholic Church, becoming an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of New York in nineteen seventy-seven. By nineteen eighty-one, he was appointed Bishop of Metuchen, and from nineteen eighty-six to two thousand, he served as the Archbishop of Newark. His prominence continued as he became the Archbishop of Washington in two thousand and was elevated to cardinal in two thousand and one.

Throughout his career, McCarrick was known for his fundraising prowess and connections with prominent politicians, establishing himself as a significant power broker in Washington, D.C. He was often viewed as a champion of progressive Catholics within the Church. Even after his mandatory retirement from the Archdiocese of Washington in two thousand six, he remained active, traveling globally on behalf of Pope Francis.

However, McCarrick's legacy became marred by serious allegations of sexual misconduct. Reports surfaced regarding his inappropriate behavior with adult male seminarians, and in two thousand eighteen, he was removed from public ministry following credible allegations of sexual misconduct towards minors and seminarians.
