Theodore of Tarsus

Theodore of Tarsus, born in the year six hundred and two, emerged as a pivotal figure in the history of the English Church. His early life in Tarsus was dramatically altered when the Persian Empire's conquest forced him to flee to Constantinople. It was there that he pursued his studies, laying the groundwork for his future ecclesiastical career.

After his time in Constantinople, Theodore made his way to Rome, where he caught the attention of Pope Vitalian. Recognizing his potential, the Pope appointed him as the Archbishop of Canterbury in six hundred sixty-eight. This significant role would see Theodore implement crucial reforms within the English Church, shaping its future direction.

During his tenure, which lasted until six hundred ninety, Theodore was instrumental in establishing a school in Canterbury, fostering education and theological study. His contributions to the church and society were documented in two notable texts from the eighth century, ensuring that his legacy would endure through the ages.
