Theodosius II

Theodosius II, known as 'the Calligrapher', was born on April 10, 401, and ascended to the throne as Roman emperor at a remarkably young age. Proclaimed Augustus as an infant, he became the sole ruler of the Eastern Roman Empire following the death of his father, Arcadius, in 408. His reign, which lasted until 450, was characterized by significant legal and architectural advancements.

One of Theodosius II's most notable achievements was the promulgation of the Theodosian law code, a comprehensive compilation of laws that would influence the legal framework of the empire for centuries. Additionally, he oversaw the construction of the formidable Theodosian walls of Constantinople, which served as a critical defense for the city against various invasions.

During his time in power, Theodosius II also faced theological challenges, presiding over two major Christological controversies: Nestorianism and Eutychianism. These debates not only shaped the religious landscape of the empire but also had lasting implications for Christian doctrine.
