Theresa, Countess of Portugal

Theresa, Countess of Portugal, born around the year one thousand eighty, was a formidable political figure in the early twelfth century. She is best remembered for her claim to the throne of an independent Portugal and her tumultuous relationship with her half-sister, Queen Urraca of León. Theresa's ambition and political acumen led her to be recognized as Queen by Pope Paschal II in the year one thousand one hundred sixteen.

However, her reign was fraught with challenges. In one thousand one hundred twenty-one, she was captured and compelled to accept the vassalage of Portugal to León, although she retained her royal title. This period marked a significant turning point in her life, as her political maneuvers and personal alliances shaped the future of the region.

One of the most notable aspects of Theresa's life was her alliance with the Galician nobleman Fernando Pérez de Traba. This relationship, both political and romantic, ultimately led to her downfall. In one thousand one hundred twenty-eight, her son, Afonso Henriques, with the backing of the Portuguese nobility and clergy, defeated her at the Battle of São Mamede, resulting in her ousting from power.
