Theuderic I

Theuderic I, born in four hundred eighty-five, was a prominent Merovingian monarch who ruled over Metz, Rheims, and the region known as Austrasia from five hundred eleven until his death in five hundred thirty-four. As the son of the renowned Clovis I, Theuderic inherited his kingdom following his father's passing, in accordance with the Salian tradition that divided the realm among Clovis's four surviving sons.

During his reign, Theuderic faced numerous challenges, including a conflict with the Scandinavian King Chlochilaich, whom he sent his son Theudebert to eliminate after the king invaded his territory. His involvement in the war between the Thuringian kings, Hermanfrid and Baderic, marked a significant moment in his rule. Although he was promised half of Thuringia for his assistance, the land was not relinquished after Baderic's defeat.

In five hundred thirty-one, seeking retribution, Theuderic, alongside his brother Chlothar and his son, launched an attack on Thuringia. With the support of the Saxons, they successfully conquered the region, leading to the death of Hermanfrid in battle and the annexation of his kingdom. Theuderic's military endeavors also extended to conflicts with the Burgundian kings, where he played a crucial role in the defeat of Godomar.

In his personal life, Theuderic married Suavegotha, the daughter of the captured Sigismund of Burgundy, and fathered a son, Theudebert, and a daughter, Theodechild. Theodechild would later establish the Abbey of St-Pierre le Vif at Sens. Theuderic's reign came to an end in five hundred thirty-four, after which his son Theudebert ascended to the throne of Metz, continuing the legacy of the Merovingian dynasty.
