Thierry Mugler, born on December 21, 1945, was a pioneering French fashion designer and creative director known for his avant-garde and theatrical approach to haute couture. He launched his eponymous fashion house in the 1970s, quickly gaining recognition for his architectural designs that celebrated hyperfemininity. Mugler was a trailblazer in championing diversity on the runway, often featuring non-traditional models, including drag queens, porn stars, and transgender women, while addressing issues of racism and ageism.
At the outset of his illustrious career, Mugler crafted iconic looks for music legends such as Michael Jackson, Madonna, Grace Jones, and David Bowie. His design for Demi Moore's dress in the 1993 film 'Indecent Proposal' became known as the most famous dress of the 1990s. In 1992, he not only directed but also designed the outfits for George Michael's 'Too Funky' music video, further solidifying his influence in the entertainment industry.
In the same year, Mugler launched the perfume Angel, which went on to become one of the best-selling fragrances of the twentieth century. His fall 1995 haute couture collection, celebrating the twentieth anniversary of his brand, was staged at the Cirque d'hiver in Paris and has been dubbed the 'Woodstock of Fashion' for its elaborate set design and the inclusion of over three hundred unique looks, alongside performances from high-profile artists like James Brown.
After retiring from his brand in two thousand two, Mugler made a triumphant return in two thousand thirteen as a creative adviser. He notably came out of retirement to design costumes for Beyoncé's 'I Am... World Tour' and created a one-off design for Kim Kardashian for the 2019 Met Gala, showcasing his enduring impact on the fashion world.
