Thomas-Alexandre Dumas, born on March twenty-fifth, seventeen sixty-two in Saint-Domingue, was a remarkable military officer who made history as the first person of color to achieve the rank of brigadier general, divisional general, and general-in-chief in the French Army. The son of a French nobleman, Marquis Alexandre Antoine Davy de la Pailleterie, and Marie-Cessette Dumas, an enslaved woman of African descent, Dumas was born into slavery. However, his father brought him to France in seventeen seventy-six, where he received an education and eventually entered the military.
His military career began in seventeen eighty-six when he enlisted as a private. By the age of thirty-one, Dumas commanded fifty-three thousand troops as the General-in-Chief of the French Army of the Alps. His strategic prowess was evident during the French Revolutionary Wars, particularly in seventeen ninety-four when he opened the high Alpine passes, enabling the French to launch their Second Italian Campaign against the Austrian Empire. His leadership earned him the nickname Schwarzer Teufel, or 'Black Devil,' from Austrian troops, and he was celebrated by the French, including Napoleon, as 'the Horatius Cocles of the Tyrol' for his heroic actions at a bridge over the Eisack River in March seventeen ninety-seven.
Dumas also played a significant role in the French campaign in Egypt and the Levant during the Expédition d’Égypte from seventeen ninety-eight to eighteen oh-one, where he commanded the cavalry forces. His relationship with Napoleon was complex, marked by verbal clashes during their march from Alexandria to Cairo. In March seventeen ninety-nine, Dumas faced adversity when he was captured and imprisoned in a dungeon in Naples until his release in the spring of eighteen oh-one.
Upon returning to France, Dumas's legacy continued through his son, Alexandre Dumas, who would become one of France's most celebrated authors. The literary works of his son were inspired by the life and experiences of Thomas-Alexandre, ensuring that his father's remarkable story would endure through the ages.
