Thomas Bain

Thomas Bain, a prominent figure in Canadian politics, was born on December fourteenth, eighteen thirty-four, in Scotland. At the tender age of three, he and his family migrated to Canada, settling on a bush farm in Wentworth County, near Hamilton, Ontario. This early experience in agriculture would later shape his political focus.

In the 1860s, Bain began his political career by being elected to the County Council, where he eventually served as Warden. His dedication to public service led him to the House of Commons of Canada, where he was first elected as a Liberal in the federal election of eighteen seventy-two. Over the next twenty-eight years, Bain was re-elected six times, becoming a respected voice on agricultural issues and taking on the role of Chairman of the Committee on Agriculture and Colonization in eighteen ninety-six.

In eighteen seventy-four, Bain married Helen Weir, marking a significant personal milestone in his life. His political journey took a notable turn in July eighteen ninety-nine when he was appointed Speaker of the House of Commons following the unexpected death of James David Edgar. Bain held this esteemed position until the House was dissolved for the election of nineteen hundred, in which he chose not to run.

After retiring from politics in nineteen hundred, Bain transitioned to the business sector, becoming President of the Landed Banking and Loan Company as well as the Malcolm and Souter Furniture Company. He lived a fulfilling life until his passing in Dundas, Ontario, at the age of eighty.
