Thomas Linacre

Thomas Linacre, born in the year fourteen sixty, was a distinguished English humanist scholar, Catholic priest, and physician. His legacy is honored through institutions such as Linacre College at Oxford and Linacre House, a boys' boarding house at The King's School in Canterbury. Linacre's contributions to the fields of medicine and education were significant, though he was more recognized as a scholar than a scientific investigator.

During a pivotal time in the history of learning, Linacre emerged as one of the first Englishmen to study Greek in Italy, bringing back the transformative ideas of the 'New Learning' to England and the University of Oxford. His education under some of the greatest scholars of his time laid the foundation for his future influence in academia.

Among his notable pupils was Erasmus, whose prominence in letters and politics ensured that Linacre's teachings would not be forgotten. He also mentored other influential figures, including Sir Thomas More, Prince Arthur, and Queen Mary I of England. Linacre's friendships with eminent scholars such as John Colet, William Grocyn, and William Lilye further solidified his standing in the intellectual community of Europe.
