Thomas Lubanga Dyilo

Thomas Lubanga Dyilo, born on December twenty-ninth, nineteen sixty, is a notable figure in the political and military landscape of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). He is recognized as a convicted war criminal and holds the distinction of being the first individual convicted by the International Criminal Court (ICC). Lubanga founded and led the Union of Congolese Patriots (UPC), playing a pivotal role in the Ituri conflict that spanned from nineteen ninety-nine to two thousand seven.

Under his command, rebels were implicated in severe human rights violations, including ethnic massacres, murder, torture, rape, mutilation, and the forced conscription of child soldiers. His actions during this tumultuous period have left a lasting impact on the region and its people.

On March seventeenth, two thousand six, Lubanga was arrested under a warrant issued by the ICC. His trial commenced on January twenty-six, two thousand nine, focusing on the war crime of conscripting and enlisting minors under the age of fifteen to participate actively in hostilities. On March fourteenth, two thousand twelve, he was found guilty and faced a potential sentence of up to thirty years.

Ultimately, on July tenth, two thousand twelve, the ICC sentenced Lubanga to fourteen years of imprisonment, with time served from his surrender in two thousand six deducted from his sentence, resulting in a six-year reduction. He was released from prison in two thousand twenty. In early two thousand twenty-five, he re-emerged by establishing a new militia in the DRC, indicating his continued influence in the region.
