Thomas of Bosnia

Thomas of Bosnia, born in 1412, was a significant figure in the tumultuous history of the Kingdom of Bosnia. As the illegitimate son of King Ostoja, he ascended to the throne in 1443 following the reign of King Tvrtko II. However, his claim to the crown was met with resistance from the powerful magnate Stjepan Vukčić Kosača, leading to a civil war that would shape his reign.

In a bid to solidify his power, Thomas repudiated his first wife, Vojača, and married Kosača's daughter, Catherine. This strategic alliance, however, did not quell the conflicts that plagued his rule. Both Thomas and Catherine, raised in the Bosnian Church tradition, converted to Roman Catholicism, which marked a significant shift in the religious landscape of the kingdom. They became patrons of the construction of churches and monasteries, reflecting their commitment to their new faith.

Throughout his reign, Thomas faced numerous challenges, including a protracted war with the Serbian Despotate over the valuable mining town of Srebrenica. His relationship with the Ottoman Empire was fraught with tension, and despite his willingness to lead a Christian coalition against the Turks, he found little support from other Christian rulers. In 1458, he attempted to strengthen his position by arranging a marriage between his son Stephen and the Serbian heiress Helena, but this effort was short-lived as the Ottomans swiftly conquered the region.

Thomas' inability to defend Serbia tarnished his reputation across Europe, prompting him to turn against the Bosnian Church in a bid to improve his standing among Catholic leaders. This marked him as the first Bosnian ruler to engage in religious persecution, a move that earned him both admiration and scorn from his contemporaries. His son Stephen would eventually succeed him, demonstrating a more adept approach to the challenges of their time.
