Thyra, the esteemed wife of King Gorm the Old of Denmark, stands as one of the earliest queens of the nation, with her historical existence supported by Viking Age runic inscriptions. Unlike many figures of her time, Thyra is believed to be a real person rather than a mere legend, a fact that adds depth to her legacy.

Medieval sources depict her as a wise and formidable woman, credited with the construction and fortification of the Danevirke, a significant defensive structure. Her influence is further commemorated on various Viking Age runestones, particularly those at Jelling, which served as the power center for her dynasty.

Despite the documentation of her existence, much about Thyra remains shrouded in mystery due to the scarcity of contemporary sources. The narratives surrounding her life are primarily derived from the Icelandic sagas and the writings of medieval historians such as Saxo Grammaticus and Sven Aggesen, which often present conflicting accounts.

While the exact timeline of her birth and ascension to queenship is unclear, it is widely accepted that she ruled until her death in the mid-tenth century. Thyra and Gorm are recognized as the parents of Harald Bluetooth, a pivotal figure in Danish history, and possibly Canute. Additionally, the Historia Norwegiæ suggests they had a daughter named Gunnhild, known as the Mother of Kings, although this claim is less certain.
