Timoci Bavadra

Timoci Bavadra, born on September twenty-second, nineteen thirty-four, in Viseisei, Viti Levu, was a prominent Fijian medical doctor and politician. He is best known for founding the Fiji Labour Party and serving as the Prime Minister of Fiji for a brief period in nineteen eighty-seven. His political journey began with a remarkable electoral coalition between his Labour Party and the National Federation Party, which was predominantly Indo-Fijian.

The coalition's success in the nineteen eighty-seven elections was a significant upset, capturing twenty-eight seats and ending the long-standing reign of Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara. Despite being an ethnic Fijian, Bavadra's support primarily came from the Indo-Fijian community, with only seven of the twenty-eight members of his parliamentary caucus being ethnic Fijians. This unique political landscape stirred resentment among some extremist factions within the ethnic Fijian population.

Bavadra was a vocal opponent of nuclear testing and expressed concerns regarding the presence of nuclear-armed warships from the United States Navy. His government faced challenges, culminating in a coup led by Lieutenant-Colonel Sitiveni Rabuka on May thirteenth, nineteen eighty-seven. Following the coup, Bavadra was formally dismissed by Governor-General Ratu Sir Penaia Ganilau on May nineteenth. Despite his efforts to garner support from Commonwealth nations, he received limited assistance, and his attempts to meet with Queen Elizabeth in London were thwarted.

After a tumultuous period marked by military rule and negotiations, Ratu Mara returned to power on December fifth, nineteen eighty-seven. Tragically, Timoci Bavadra passed away from cancer in nineteen eighty-nine, leaving behind a complex legacy in Fijian politics.
