Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Timur

Timur, also known as Tamerlane, was a formidable Turco-Mongol conqueror born in the 1320s in Transoxiana, now part of Uzbekistan. He emerged as the first ruler of the Timurid dynasty and the founder of the Timurid Empire, which spanned modern-day Afghanistan, Iran, and Central Asia. Renowned for his military prowess, Timur was undefeated in battle and is celebrated as one of history's greatest military leaders and tacticians, albeit with a reputation for brutality.

By 1370, Timur had seized control of the western Chagatai Khanate, launching a series of successful military campaigns against formidable foes such as the Khans of the Golden Horde, the Mamluk Sultanate, the Ottoman Empire, and the Delhi Sultanate. His conquests solidified his status as the most powerful ruler in the Muslim world, leading to the establishment of the Timurid Empire, which, despite its fragmentation after his death, left a lasting legacy.

Timur was a polyglot, fluent in several languages including Chagatai, Classical Mongolian, and New Persian, which he utilized for diplomatic purposes. He was a descendant of both Turkic and Mongol lineages and sought to revive the legacy of Genghis Khan, whom he regarded as his predecessor. His self-styled title, the 'Sword of Islam,' reflected his dual role as a patron of religion and the arts, as well as a ghazi, or religious warrior, in his later years.

His military campaigns were devastating, with estimates suggesting that millions perished as a result of his conquests, particularly in Khwarazm, which faced his wrath multiple times. Timur's armies, known for their multi-ethnic composition, wreaked havoc across Asia, Africa, and Europe. He was also the grandfather of Ulugh Beg, a notable Timurid sultan and scholar, and the great-great-great-grandfather of Babur, the founder of the Mughal Empire.
