Tito Gobbi, born on October twenty-fourth, nineteen thirteen, was an illustrious Italian operatic baritone renowned for his exceptional talent and international acclaim. He made his operatic debut in Gubbio in nineteen thirty-five, captivating audiences as Count Rodolfo in Bellini's La sonnambula. His remarkable career quickly flourished, leading him to perform in Italy's most prestigious opera houses.
Over the span of his career, which concluded in nineteen seventy-nine, Gobbi amassed an impressive repertoire of nearly one hundred operatic roles. His versatility allowed him to traverse a wide range of works, from the mid-range baritone roles of Mozart to the iconic pieces of Verdi and Puccini, as well as the challenging compositions of Alban Berg, including Wozzeck.
In addition to his operatic performances, Gobbi enjoyed a prolific career in film, contributing his vocal talents to over twenty-five films. From the mid-nineteen sixties onward, he also took on the role of stage director for approximately ten different operas, overseeing close to thirty-five productions across Europe and North America, with a notable presence at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.
Beyond his professional achievements, Gobbi's personal life was equally rich. He was married to Tilde De Rensis, and together they had a daughter, Cecilia, who now leads the Associazione Musicale Tito Gobbi, dedicated to honoring her father's legacy in the world of opera.
