Togiola Talalelei A. Tulafono, born on February 28, 1947, is a distinguished American Samoan politician and lawyer, recognized for his impactful leadership as the sixth governor of American Samoa. A member of the Democratic Party, Tulafono's political journey is marked by his commitment to public service and community development.
Before ascending to the governorship, Tulafono served as the seventh lieutenant governor. His tenure as lieutenant governor took a pivotal turn on March 26, 2003, when Governor Tauese Pita Fiti Sunia passed away. Following this tragic event, Tulafono stepped into the role of acting governor and was officially sworn in as governor on April 7, 2003.
In the November 2004 gubernatorial elections, he was elected to a full four-year term, showcasing the trust and support of the electorate. His leadership was reaffirmed when he was re-elected in the November 2008 gubernatorial election, further solidifying his influence in the territory's political landscape.
However, Tulafono's governorship came to a close in 2012 due to term limits, preventing him from seeking a third consecutive term. In 2014, he ventured into a new political challenge as a candidate for American Samoa's at-large congressional district, although this attempt did not result in election.
