Formed in 2001, Tokio Hotel is a dynamic German pop rock band that has captivated audiences worldwide. The group consists of singer Bill Kaulitz, guitarist Tom Kaulitz, bassist Georg Listing, and drummer Gustav Schäfer. Initially rooted in pop rock and alternative rock, the band transitioned to electropop and synth-pop starting in 2014, showcasing their versatility and evolution in the music industry.
After a challenging start, including the termination of their contract with Sony BMG Germany, Tokio Hotel released their debut German-language album, Schrei, in 2005 under Universal Music Germany. The album achieved remarkable success, selling over half a million copies globally and producing four top-five singles in Germany and Austria, establishing the band as a formidable force in the music scene.
In 2007, the band expanded their reach with the release of their second German-language album, Zimmer 483, alongside their first English-language album, Scream. These albums collectively sold more than two and a half million copies worldwide, earning them their first MTV Europe Music Award for Best InterAct. Zimmer 483 produced three top-five singles in Germany, while Scream achieved significant success in new markets, including France, Portugal, Spain, and Italy.
Tokio Hotel's accolades continued to grow, highlighted by their historic win at the MTV Video Music Awards in September 2008 for Best New Artist, making them the first German band to receive such recognition. They further solidified their status with multiple awards at the MTV Europe Music Awards, including Best Group in 2009 and Best World Stage Performance in 2010. By July 2011, they became the first German band to win an award at the MTV Video Music Awards Japan, and to date, they have sold over ten million records worldwide.
Their most recent work, the album 2001..., released in 2022, marks another chapter in their illustrious career, continuing to engage fans with their innovative sound and artistic vision.
