Tokugawa Iemochi

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Tokugawa Iemochi

Tokugawa Iemochi, born on July seventeenth, eighteen forty-six, served as the fourteenth shōgun of the Tokugawa shogunate in Japan. His tenure lasted from eighteen fifty-eight until his untimely death in eighteen sixty-six. Iemochi's leadership came during a pivotal time in Japanese history, marked by significant internal strife and the complex process of re-opening Japan to Western nations.

Throughout his reign, Iemochi faced numerous challenges that contributed to the gradual weakening of the shogunate. The influx of foreign influence and the resulting societal upheaval tested the traditional structures of power and governance in Japan.

After his passing on August twenty-ninth, eighteen sixty-six, Iemochi was laid to rest at Zōjō-ji, a significant Buddhist temple in Tokyo. His Buddhist name, Shonmyoin, reflects the spiritual legacy he left behind, even as his political era came to a close.
