Tolui

Tolui, born in 1191, was the youngest son of the legendary Genghis Khan and his wife Börte. As a prominent general during the early Mongol conquests, he quickly established himself as a formidable warrior, commanding armies in significant campaigns such as the first invasion of Jin China from 1211 to 1215. His military prowess was further demonstrated during the Mongol invasion of the Khwarazmian Empire, where he earned a fearsome reputation for his ruthless efficiency in subjugating cities like Merv and Nishapur.

Despite being less active than his elder brothers during their father's rise to power, Tolui's position as a leading candidate for succession was solidified by the elimination of his brothers Jochi and Chagatai. Following Genghis Khan's death in mid-1227, Tolui became regent, overseeing his father's burial and the administration of the Mongol Empire until his brother Ögedei was crowned in 1229. His tenure as regent was marked by a desire for power, yet he ultimately pledged allegiance to Ögedei.

In 1230, Tolui joined Ögedei in resuming warfare against the Jin dynasty, achieving success and returning to Mongolia two years later. However, his life came to an abrupt end in late 1232 under mysterious circumstances. Official records state he died during a shamanic ritual while attempting to save Ögedei from a curse, but alternative theories suggest he may have succumbed to alcoholism or even been poisoned.

Following Tolui's death, his wife Sorghaghtani Beki skillfully managed his lands and amassed considerable wealth, ensuring that their son Möngke ascended to power in 1251 after the death of Ögedei's son Güyük. Tolui's legacy, marked by both military brilliance and familial intrigue, continues to resonate in the annals of Mongol history.
