Tom Ponting

Tom Ponting, born on January 28, 1965, is a distinguished former competitive swimmer from Canada, renowned for his expertise in the butterfly stroke. His remarkable career includes participation in three consecutive Summer Olympic Games, beginning with the 1984 Summer Olympics held in Los Angeles, California. At each of these prestigious events, Ponting showcased his talent by securing medals as a vital member of the men's 4 × 100 m medley relay team, earning two silver medals and one bronze.

In 1989, Ponting made waves in the swimming world by breaking both the world and Canadian records in the 100-metre butterfly at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) swimming championships. His record time of fifty-two point sixty-two seconds remains unbroken and is still recognized as the CIS record today.

According to the Team Canada website in 2025, Ponting stands out as one of only two swimmers in Canadian history to achieve the remarkable feat of winning three Olympic medals across three different Olympic Games, specifically in 1984, 1988, and 1992. His legacy in the sport is further highlighted by his contributions to the world record in the short course 4 × 100 m medley relay in both 1991 and 1992.
