Tom Ridge, born on August twenty-six, nineteen forty-five, in Munhall, Pennsylvania, is a distinguished American politician and lawyer. Raised in veterans' public housing in Erie, he pursued higher education at Harvard University, graduating with honors. His commitment to service led him to the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, where he earned the Bronze Star. After returning to Pennsylvania, he completed his Juris Doctor degree at the Dickinson School of Law in nineteen seventy-two and began his legal career in private practice.
Ridge's political journey began as an assistant district attorney in Erie, where he successfully ran for Congress, serving six terms in the United States House of Representatives from nineteen eighty-three to nineteen ninety-five. In nineteen ninety-four, he made a name for himself by winning the governorship of Pennsylvania, despite being relatively unknown outside of northwest Pennsylvania. His reelection in nineteen ninety-eight marked a historic achievement, as he garnered the most votes for a Republican governor in Pennsylvania in over fifty years, even in a state where Democrats outnumbered Republicans by almost five hundred thousand.
As the forty-third governor of Pennsylvania from nineteen ninety-five to two thousand one, Ridge is credited with significant advancements in economic development, education, health care, and environmental policies. Following the tragic events of September eleventh, two thousand one, President George W. Bush appointed him as the first director of the newly established Office of Homeland Security. In January two thousand three, this office evolved into the Department of Homeland Security, with Ridge serving as its inaugural Secretary until two thousand five.
After his tenure in public service, Ridge transitioned back to the private sector, taking on roles on the boards of major corporations such as Home Depot, Hershey Company, and Exelon Corporation. He also served as a senior advisor to Deloitte & Touche and TechRadium, while founding Ridge Global, a security consulting firm based in Washington, D.C. His political influence continued as he campaigned alongside Senator John McCain during the two thousand eight presidential election, where he was speculated to be a potential running mate.
