Tomás de Torquemada

Tomás de Torquemada, born on 14 October 1420, was a prominent Spanish Dominican friar who became the first Grand Inquisitor of the Spanish Inquisition. His tenure began in 1478, a pivotal time when the crowns of Castile and Aragon united, leading to a fervent effort to maintain Catholic orthodoxy in the newly formed Kingdom of Spain.

During his time, Torquemada was a key figure in the persecution of Jews and Muslims, who often found it beneficial to convert to Catholicism, becoming known as conversos, moriscos, and marranos. The Catholic Monarchs viewed these superficial conversions as a significant threat to their religious and social order, prompting Torquemada to support the Alhambra Decree, which resulted in the expulsion of Jews from Spain in 1492.

Torquemada's legacy is marred by the brutal methods employed by the Inquisition, including torture and executions by burning at the stake. His approval and advocacy of such practices have led to his name becoming synonymous with cruelty, religious intolerance, and fanaticism, casting a long shadow over his historical impact.
