Tomislav, King of Croatia

Tomislav, the first king of Croatia, emerged as a significant figure in the early medieval period. He became Duke of Croatia around the year nine hundred and ten and was crowned king by nine hundred twenty-five, reigning until approximately nine hundred twenty-eight. His rule was marked by strategic alliances, notably with the Byzantine Empire, as both powers united against the formidable threat of the First Bulgarian Empire.

During his reign, Croatia faced numerous challenges, including military confrontations with Bulgaria that culminated in the pivotal Battle of the Bosnian Highlands in nine hundred twenty-six. Additionally, the northern borders of Croatia were often contested, particularly with the Principality of Hungary. Despite these conflicts, Tomislav's leadership helped maintain and even expand Croatia's territorial integrity amidst the disintegration of Lower Pannonia.

In nine hundred twenty-five, Tomislav participated in the Council of Split, convened by Pope John X. This council aimed to address the use of Slavic languages in liturgy and the ecclesiastical jurisdiction over Croatia and the Byzantine Theme of Dalmatia. Although the Pope sought to limit Slavic liturgy, the council ultimately did not agree with his stance, granting jurisdiction over the region to the Archbishop of Split instead of Bishop Gregory of Nin.

Despite the significance of his reign, historical records on Tomislav are limited, leaving the exact dates of his accession and death shrouded in uncertainty. His successors faced a tumultuous period characterized by civil wars and a gradual decline in the stability of the Croatian state.
