Tommaso Campanella

Tommaso Campanella, born Giovanni Domenico Campanella on September fifth, fifteen sixty-eight, was a prominent Italian Dominican friar whose intellectual pursuits spanned philosophy, theology, astrology, and poetry. In fifteen ninety-four, Campanella faced severe repercussions for his beliefs when he was prosecuted by the Roman Inquisition for heresy. Accused of conspiring against the Spanish rulers of Calabria in fifteen ninety-nine, he endured torture and was subsequently imprisoned for an astonishing twenty-seven years.

It was during this time that he penned some of his most influential works, including his celebrated utopian treatise, The City of the Sun.
