Stephen Christopher Yaxley-Lennon, born on November 27, 1982, is widely recognized as Tommy Robinson, a prominent British political activist and journalist. He is best known for his far-right views and anti-Islam activism, having co-founded the English Defence League (EDL) in 2009, where he served as leader until 2013. Robinson's political journey began with his involvement in the British National Party (BNP) from 2004 to 2005, and he briefly held the position of joint vice-chairman of the British Freedom Party (BFP) in 2012.
In 2015, Robinson played a role in establishing Pegida UK, a British offshoot of the German anti-Islam movement. His media presence expanded from 2017 to 2018 when he contributed to the Canadian platform Rebel News, producing documentary videos that often sparked controversy. His work has included coverage of sensitive topics such as the grooming gangs scandal, although some of his content has faced legal scrutiny for defamatory statements.
Robinson's life has been marked by legal challenges, including multiple criminal convictions for offenses such as assault, harassment, and fraud. He has served five prison terms between 2005 and 2025, alongside facing contempt of court rulings related to his documentaries. Financially, he has encountered significant difficulties, declaring bankruptcy in March 2021 after reportedly losing one hundred thousand pounds in gambling. By August 2024, reports indicated that he owed approximately two million pounds to creditors and was under investigation by HM Revenue and Customs for unpaid taxes.
