Tomomi Inada

Tomomi Inada, born on February 20, 1959, is a prominent Japanese lawyer and politician, currently serving as a member of the House of Representatives for the 1st Fukui Prefecture since September 2005. Her political career has seen her take on significant roles, including her tenure as Minister of Defense from August 2016 to July 2017, a position she resigned from amid a cover-up scandal within the Japanese Ministry of Defense.

Inada has also held the influential role of Chairwoman of the Policy Research Council of the Liberal Democratic Party during her fourth term in the Diet, Japan's national legislature. A native of Fukui Prefecture, she has been an active figure in Japanese politics, navigating complex issues and controversies.

Her views on historical matters have sparked debate; she has expressed skepticism regarding the narratives surrounding comfort women during World War II and has questioned the international consensus on the death toll of the Nanjing Massacre. In recent years, she was implicated in the 2023–2024 Japanese slush fund scandal for failing to record over eight hundred twenty thousand yen, although she has denied any wrongdoing.
