Tony Iommi

Anthony Frank Iommi Jr., born on February 19, 1948, is a legendary English musician renowned for his role as the co-founder of the iconic heavy metal band Black Sabbath. Since the band's inception in 1968, Iommi has been the driving force behind their sound, serving as the guitarist, leader, and primary composer. His contributions have solidified his status as one of the creators of heavy metal music, earning him the title of the 'Godfather of Heavy Metal.'

In his teenage years, Iommi faced a life-altering challenge when he lost the tips of his right-hand ring and middle fingers in a factory accident. This incident profoundly influenced his unique playing style, prompting him to down-tune his guitar and utilize power chords extensively. His innovative use of the tritone, often referred to as the 'devil's interval,' contributed to the heavier and darker sound that became synonymous with the genre.

Beyond his work with Black Sabbath, Iommi briefly served as the live guitarist for Jethro Tull in 1968. Although he intended for his 1986 album, Seventh Star, to be his debut solo project, it was released under the Black Sabbath name. In 2000, he finally released his first official solo album, Iommi, followed by Fused in 2005, which featured former bandmate Glenn Hughes. In 2006, he formed Heaven & Hell with former Black Sabbath members, releasing The Devil You Know in 2009 before disbanding after the passing of singer Ronnie James Dio in 2010.

Regarded as one of the greatest and most influential rock guitarists of all time, Iommi has received numerous accolades, including three Grammy Awards and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Guitar Museum. He is also honored on the Birmingham Walk of Stars. In 2011, he shared his remarkable journey in his autobiography, Iron Man: My Journey Through Heaven and Hell with Black Sabbath.
