Tony Popovic

Tony Popovic, born on July fourth, nineteen seventy-three, is a distinguished Australian association football manager and former player. Currently, he holds the position of head coach for the Australia national team, bringing a wealth of experience from both his playing and coaching careers.

As a centre-back, Popovic began his professional journey with Sydney United 58 before making a significant move to Sanfrecce Hiroshima in Japan. His career flourished at Crystal Palace in the Premier League, where he showcased his skills on an international stage. Notably, he represented Australia at the 2006 FIFA World Cup, participated in two FIFA Confederations Cups, and competed in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

Transitioning to coaching in two thousand eight with Sydney FC, Popovic quickly made a name for himself. After a brief period as assistant manager at Crystal Palace, he became the inaugural manager of the Western Sydney Wanderers at the start of the 2012–13 season. His managerial accolades include winning the 2012–13 A-League Premiership and the 2014 AFC Champions League with the Wanderers, as well as the 2018–19 A-League Premiership with Perth Glory and an Australia Cup with Melbourne Victory in two thousand twenty-two.

In two thousand twenty-four, Popovic succeeded Graham Arnold and played a pivotal role in helping the Socceroos qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking a significant milestone twenty years after his own playing appearance on the world stage. Beyond his professional achievements, he is also a proud father to two sons, Kristian and Gabriel, who are following in his footsteps as professional footballers.
