His journey in the NHL began when he was selected twelfth overall by the Chicago Black Hawks in the nineteen eighty-one NHL Entry Draft.

In January nineteen eighty-three, Tanti was traded to the Vancouver Canucks, where he would spend the majority of his career. During his seven years with the team, he reached the impressive milestone of scoring forty goals on three separate occasions, solidifying his reputation as a prolific goal-scorer. His remarkable talent earned him the distinction of being the first 'true sniper' in Canucks history.

After his tenure with Vancouver, Tanti was traded in January nineteen ninety and went on to play for the Pittsburgh Penguins and Buffalo Sabres, each for one and a half years. Following twelve successful years in the NHL, he ventured overseas to compete with BSC Preussen in the German Bundesliga, ultimately retiring after the nineteen ninety-seven to nineteen ninety-eight season.
