Toussaint Charbonneau

Toussaint Charbonneau, born on March twentieth, seventeen sixty-seven, was a notable French Canadian explorer and translator. His life was marked by his adventurous spirit and his significant contributions to the Lewis and Clark Expedition, where he became the oldest member of the permanent party. Charbonneau's resilience allowed him to outlive many of his fellow explorers, as he embraced the demanding lifestyle of a fur trader, guide, and interpreter.

Raised in Canada by French parents, Charbonneau's early career as a trapper and trader for the North West Company set the stage for his later exploits. His involvement in the fur trade not only honed his skills but also provided him with the opportunity to meet the expedition's captains, ultimately leading to his participation in their historic journey.
