The origin of the name Toyen has been a subject of intrigue, with suggestions that it derives from the French word 'citoyen,' meaning citizen, or perhaps from the Czech phrase ‘to je on,’ translating to ‘it is he.’ This choice of a gender-neutral mononym was a deliberate act, as Toyen preferred to communicate in the masculine singular form, defying the traditional gendered norms of the Czech language.
