Tracey Deer

Tracey Deer, a talented First Nations (Mohawk) filmmaker, screenwriter, and newspaper publisher, has made significant contributions to the film industry from her base in Kahnawake, Quebec. With a passion for storytelling, she has created several award-winning documentaries through Rezolution Pictures, an Aboriginal-run production company dedicated to showcasing Indigenous narratives.

In 2008, Deer achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first Mohawk woman to win a Gemini Award for her impactful documentary, Club Native. Her acclaimed television series, Mohawk Girls, aired for five seasons from 2014 to 2017, further solidifying her reputation as a leading voice in Indigenous cinema.

In March 2021, Deer premiered her dramatic film, Beans, at the New York International Children's Film Festival. This poignant film, set against the backdrop of the Oka crisis of 1990, reflects her personal experiences as an adolescent during that tumultuous time. The film features Kiawenti:io Tarbell, a promising young actress from Akwesasne, bringing authenticity to the narrative.

In addition to her directorial work, Deer has established her own production company, focusing on independent short films, which showcases her commitment to fostering new talent and diverse stories within the film industry.
