Tracy Chapman, born on March 30, 1964, is an acclaimed American singer-songwriter known for her powerful voice and poignant lyrics. She was signed to Elektra Records in 1987 by Bob Krasnow, marking the beginning of a remarkable career. The following year, she released her self-titled debut album, which achieved commercial success, particularly after her performance at the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute concert. This album was certified six times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America and garnered six Grammy Award nominations, winning three, including Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for her iconic single 'Fast Car'. In 2025, this groundbreaking album was preserved in the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress.

In 1989, Chapman released her second album, 'Crossroads', which earned her another Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Folk Album.
