On April second, 2016, Trần Đại Quang was elected president by the National Assembly of Vietnam, following the nomination from his predecessor, Trương Tấn Sang. As one of the country's top leaders, he held a significant position within the Politburo, ranking second only to Nguyễn Phú Trọng, the General Secretary of the Communist Party.
