Tristan Corbière

Tristan Corbière, born on July eighteenth, eighteen forty-five, was a French poet and writer who spent the majority of his brief life in Brittany. He is often associated with the Symbolist movement and is recognized as a quintessential figure of the 'cursed poet' archetype. His life was marked by struggles, including a debilitating bone disease and societal perceptions of his appearance, which he openly criticized.

Corbière's literary output is limited to a single collection of poetry titled Les Amours Jaunes and a handful of prose pieces. His work reflects profound personal wounds, particularly stemming from his unfulfilled romantic aspirations and his thwarted dreams of becoming a sailor, like his father, Édouard Corbière. He loved only one woman, referred to as 'Marcelle' in his writings, which adds a layer of poignancy to his poetry.

Despite his innovative style and incisive commentary on life, Corbière lived a largely marginal existence, entrenched in his old Breton manor. He died at the young age of twenty-nine, likely from tuberculosis, leaving behind a legacy that was not fully appreciated until long after his passing.
