His talent was recognized early on when he was selected fifty-seventh overall by the Chicago Blackhawks in the nineteen eighty NHL entry draft.

In nineteen eighty-two, Murray proudly represented Canada's national junior team, contributing to their gold medal victory at the World Junior Championships. He later returned to international play with the senior team at the nineteen eighty-seven World Championships, showcasing his skills on a global stage.

Murray's professional career took off with the Blackhawks in nineteen eighty-two, where he spent nine successful seasons. His exceptional performance earned him the Frank J. Selke Trophy in nineteen eighty-six, awarded to the league's best defensive forward. In nineteen ninety-two, he was traded to the Winnipeg Jets, but he eventually returned to the Blackhawks, with stints at the Ottawa Senators and Pittsburgh Penguins along the way.
