Tua Forsström

Tua Forsström, born on April second, nineteen forty-seven, is a distinguished Finland-Swedish poet and writer who crafts her works in Swedish. Her literary journey began with the publication of her first book, 'A Poem about Love and Other Things' in nineteen seventy-two. However, it was her sixth collection, 'Snow Leopard' in nineteen eighty-seven, that marked her breakthrough into the English-speaking literary world, earning her the Poetry Book Society Translation Award in the United Kingdom in nineteen ninety.

Forsström's poetry is deeply rooted in her experiences and the Finnish landscape, often exploring themes of travel and the complexities of human relationships. She is known for her innovative use of quotations, seamlessly integrating them into her poems or presenting them as interludes, drawing from a diverse range of thinkers including Egon Friedell, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Hermann Hesse, and Friedrich Nietzsche. Her collection 'After Spending a Night Among Horses' features quotes from Andrei Tarkovsky's film 'Stalker', presented in a unique format that invites readers to engage with the text on multiple levels.

Born to Äke Osvald Forsström, an insurance clerk, and Eila Emilia Lindroos, a primary school teacher, Forsström's academic journey led her to graduate from Ekenäs samlyceum in nineteen sixty-six and earn a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Helsinki in nineteen seventy-two. Her professional career began in nineteen seventy-three as a publishing editor at Söderström & Co., and she has been an active member of the Society of Swedish Authors in Finland since nineteen seventy-five.

In February two thousand nineteen, Forsström was elected to the Swedish Academy, taking over seat eighteen from Katarina Frostenson. She was officially inducted on December twentieth, two thousand nineteen, and her tenure concluded with her resignation on December twentieth, two thousand twenty-four.
