Turhan Sultan

Turhan Sultan, born in the year sixteen twenty-seven, emerged as a formidable figure in the Ottoman Empire, serving as the chief Haseki Sultan to Sultan Ibrahim during his reign from sixteen forty to sixteen forty-eight. Her influence extended far beyond her role as a consort; she became the Valide Sultan, the mother of Mehmed IV, who ruled from sixteen forty-eight to sixteen eighty-seven.

From sixteen fifty-one to sixteen fifty-six, Turhan held the position of Official Regent of the Ottoman Empire, effectively acting as the de facto ruler for over three decades. Her regency was marked by her dedication to her young son and her significant contributions to architectural patronage, which left a lasting impact on the empire.

Turhan Sultan is one of only two women in Ottoman history, alongside Kösem Sultan, to be recognized as official regents, wielding supreme control over the empire during a pivotal era known as the Sultanate of Women. Her legacy is characterized by her political acumen and her ability to navigate the complexities of power in a male-dominated society.
