He made history in the Atlantic Coast Conference by being the first player to earn first-team All-ACC honors four times and to be recognized as a first-team All-American on four occasions, with three of those seasons being a consensus first-team selection. His accolades include being named ACC Rookie of the Year in two thousand six and ACC Player of the Year in two thousand eight, during which he also swept all national player of the year awards.

In his senior year, Hansbrough led the Tar Heels to an NCAA championship in two thousand nine, solidifying his legacy in college basketball. Following this success, he was selected as the thirteenth overall pick by the Indiana Pacers in the two thousand nine NBA draft, where he played for four seasons.
