Tyree Washington, born on August 28, 1976, in Riverside, California, is a retired American sprinter known for his remarkable achievements in athletics. He attended La Sierra High School and later San Bernardino Valley College, where he honed his skills as a competitive athlete.
In 2003, Washington was coached by Antonio Pettigrew, a fellow sprinter who had previously set a world record in the 4 × 400 metres relay. Despite the accolades, Pettigrew and his teammates faced doping violations that overshadowed their accomplishments. The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) eventually recognized a different quartet as the official world record holders.
During the 2003 World Championships, Washington initially celebrated a first-place finish in the 4 × 400 metres relay alongside Jerome Young, Calvin Harrison, and Derrick Brew. However, the team was later stripped of their medals due to Harrison's doping violation. Following Young's lifetime ban for a second offence, Washington was awarded the gold medal retrospectively, marking a significant moment in his career.
Washington's last major victory came at the 2006 World Indoor Championships, showcasing his enduring talent in the sport. He concluded his competitive career in 2008 after an unsuccessful attempt to qualify for the US Olympic trials, leaving behind a legacy of resilience and determination in the world of athletics.
