Uku Masing

Uku Masing, born on August eleventh, nineteen oh nine, was an Estonian polymath whose intellectual pursuits spanned a remarkable array of fields including theology, oriental studies, philosophy, poetry, folklore, and ethnology. His contributions to Estonian religious philosophy established him as a significant figure in the landscape of thought during his time.

In addition to his philosophical work, Masing was a prolific poet, often exploring themes of spirituality and religion in his writings. He authored a novel titled 'Rapanui vabastamine ehk Kajakad jumalate kalmistul' (Liberation of Rapa Nui, or Seagulls at the Cemetery of Gods) in the late nineteen thirties, which, although published posthumously in nineteen eighty-nine, reflects his deep engagement with complex ideas.

Masing's scholarly pursuits also included a distinguished role as a folklorist, where he made significant contributions to the international Encyclopedia of the Folktale, particularly in the study of fairy tales. His research not only enriched the field but also highlighted the cultural narratives of Estonia.

During the tumultuous years of the Holocaust, Masing demonstrated remarkable courage and humanity. He was awarded the title of Righteous Among The Nations by Yad Vashem and the Israeli Supreme Court for his efforts in aiding a Jewish friend escape capture in Estonia from nineteen forty-one until the end of the war. His actions during this perilous time required immense bravery, as he risked his own safety to protect others.
