Umar ibn Abi Rabi'ah

Umar ibn Abi Rabi'ah, born in November six hundred forty-four in Mecca, was a distinguished Arab poet renowned for his contributions to love poetry and the literary form known as ghazel. Hailing from a wealthy family within the Quraysh tribe, he was the son of ʿAbd Allāh and Asmā bint Mukharriba. His lineage and upbringing in a prosperous environment greatly influenced his artistic expression.

Characterized by the biographer Ibn Khallikan as 'the best poet ever produced by the tribe of Quraysh', Umar's work was deeply inspired by the beauty he observed in everyday life and during pilgrimage. His poetry often reflected his passionate nature, capturing the essence of love and admiration.

Among his most notable affections was al-Thurayya bint Ali, a woman of remarkable lineage and beauty. Their connection inspired Umar to compose memorable verses, particularly during her marriage to Suhayl ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān. In a clever play on words, he lamented the distance between the stars represented by their names, highlighting the celestial theme that permeated his work.
