Umm Ayman

Umm Ayman, originally known as Baraka, was an Abyssinian slave who played a significant role in the early life of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. She was born into servitude under Muhammad's parents, Abdullah ibn Abd al-Muttalib and Aminah bint Wahb. After the untimely death of Aminah, Baraka became a maternal figure for the young Muhammad, helping to raise him in the household of his grandfather, Abd Al-Muttalib ibn Hashim.

Recognizing her loyalty and dedication, Muhammad later granted her freedom. Despite her emancipation, Umm Ayman chose to remain close to Muhammad and his family, continuing to serve them. She was among the early converts to Islam, demonstrating her commitment to the new faith during pivotal moments, including the battles of Uhud and Khaybar.

In addition to her role as a caregiver and supporter, Muhammad arranged for Umm Ayman to marry Ubayd ibn Zayd from the Banu Khazraj. This union blessed her with a son, Ayman ibn Ubayd, which earned her the affectionate title of Umm Ayman, meaning 'mother of Ayman.' Later, she married Zayd ibn Harithah, Muhammad's adopted son, and together they had a son, Usama ibn Zayd, who would go on to become a notable commander in the early Muslim army, leading the Expedition of Usama bin Zayd into the Byzantine Empire.
