Unity Dow

Unity Dow, born on April twenty-third, nineteen fifty-nine, is a prominent Motswana lawyer, author, and human rights activist. She has made significant contributions to Botswana's legal landscape, serving as a judge on the High Court and holding various ministerial positions. Dow's journey began in the Bechuanaland Protectorate, where she was raised in a traditional rural village by a seamstress and a farmer who valued education highly.

After earning her law degree in nineteen eighty-three from the University of Botswana and Swaziland, Dow opened the first all-woman law firm in Botswana. Her groundbreaking career continued as she became the first woman appointed to the High Court in nineteen ninety-seven. Dow's legal prowess was showcased in several landmark cases, including Unity Dow v Attorney-General, which abolished gender discrimination in nationality laws, and her ruling in favor of the Basarwa indigenous people in two thousand six.

In addition to her judicial work, Dow has been an influential political figure, first elected to the National Assembly in two thousand fourteen. She has held various ministerial roles, including Minister of Education and Skills Development, and has served on international commissions addressing human rights issues in multiple countries. Her literary contributions, which began in two thousand, often explore social and legal themes, highlighting the intersection of gender and power.
