Uranius, a name that echoes through the annals of Roman history, is associated with two potential usurpers from the tumultuous third century AD. The first Uranius, whose existence is primarily noted by the historian Zosimus, emerged during the waning years of Alexander Severus's reign. This figure, reportedly chosen by discontented soldiers along the Danube, hailed from humble beginnings, yet little corroborative evidence supports his claim to fame.

The second Uranius, more prominently recognized, was Lucius Julius Aurelius Sulpicius Severus Uranius Antoninus. Active in Syria during the early 250s AD, he is better documented, with coins minted in Emesa bearing his name and invoking the local deity Sol Invictus. Scholars have speculated a connection between him and an Emesan priest named Sampsiceramus, suggesting a deeper cultural and religious significance to his rule.

Despite the existence of these coins, the historical narrative remains murky regarding whether they pertain to the same individual referenced in ancient texts. If the later dating of these coins is accurate, Uranius may have played a role in defending the Roman Empire against the formidable Shapur I, the Sassanid king of Persia. However, the fate of Uranius following his claim to the throne remains shrouded in mystery, leaving historians to ponder the legacy of this enigmatic figure.
