Uri Avnery

Uri Avnery, born on September tenth, nineteen twenty-three, was a prominent Israeli journalist, writer, and politician, renowned for his unwavering commitment to peace and human rights. He founded the Gush Shalom peace movement, advocating for dialogue and understanding between Israelis and Palestinians. His early involvement with the Irgun as a teenager and his service as a veteran in the 1948 Palestine war shaped his perspectives and activism throughout his life.

Avnery served two terms in the Knesset, representing the interests of his constituents from nineteen sixty-five to nineteen seventy-four and again from nineteen seventy-nine to nineteen eighty-one. He was also the owner and editor of the influential news magazine HaOlam HaZeh from its inception in nineteen fifty until its closure in nineteen ninety-three, where he provided a platform for critical discourse on Israeli society and politics.

One of the defining moments of Avnery's career came during the Siege of Beirut in nineteen eighty-two, when he crossed enemy lines to meet with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat. This historic encounter marked the first meeting between an Israeli and Arafat, symbolizing Avnery's belief in the necessity of dialogue for peace.

As an author, Avnery penned several significant works addressing the complexities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, including '1948: A Soldier's Tale, the Bloody Road to Jerusalem' and 'Israel's Vicious Circle.' His contributions to peace activism were recognized with prestigious awards, including the Right Livelihood Award in two thousand one and the Carl von Ossietzky Medal in two thousand eight.
