Utba ibn Ghazwan

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Utba ibn Ghazwan

Utba ibn Ghazwan, born in the year five hundred eighty-one, was a prominent military figure and a loyal companion of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. He was among the earliest converts to Islam, being the seventh individual to embrace the faith. His journey began with the hijra to Abyssinia, but he later returned to Mecca to remain with Muhammad before undertaking the second hijrah to Medina.

Throughout his life, Utba demonstrated remarkable bravery and commitment, participating in significant battles such as Badr in six hundred twenty-four, Uhud in six hundred twenty-five, and the Battle of the Trench in six hundred twenty-seven. His military prowess was further showcased in various other conflicts, including the battles of Yamamah.

During the caliphate of Umar, who ruled from six hundred thirty-four to six hundred forty-four, Utba commanded a formidable force of two thousand men in a campaign against Ubullah, which spanned from June to September in the year six hundred thirty-five. Following the successful occupation of Ubullah, he led his troops across the Tigris River, capturing the districts of Furat, Meisan, and Abarqubaz.

His leadership skills did not go unnoticed, and he was appointed as the governor of Basra in Iraq by Caliph Umar. In the year six hundred thirty-nine, Utba embarked on a journey to the Hijaz to perform hajj and to request relief from his governorship. However, Umar declined his request. Tragically, while returning to Basra, Utba suffered a fatal fall from his camel, marking the end of his distinguished life. He was succeeded in governance by al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah.
