Valdemar the Young

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Valdemar the Young

Valdemar the Young, known in Danish as Valdemar den Unge, was born around the year twelve hundred and nine. He was the eldest son of King Valdemar II of Denmark and his first wife, Dagmar of Bohemia. His reign as Junior King began in the year twelve fifteen, a title he held until his untimely death on the twenty-eighth of November, twelve thirty-one.

Despite his royal lineage and position, Valdemar did not survive to become a sole monarch, as he passed away before his father. His legacy is often intertwined with the title Valdemar III, a designation that appears on his tombstone, which reads in Latin: Waldemarus Tertius Rex Daniae, Filius Waldemari Secundi, translating to 'Valdemar the Third, King of Denmark, son of Valdemar the Second.'

While the title Valdemar III is more commonly associated with a later king, Valdemar the Young's brief reign and his role as a co-ruler remain significant in the history of Denmark. His life, though short, reflects the complexities of royal succession and the challenges faced by young monarchs in medieval Europe.
