Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Vasiľ Biľak

RSDr. Vasiľ Biľak, born on August 11, 1917, in Krajná Bystrá, was a prominent Slovak Communist politician of Rusyn descent. Initially trained as a tailor and inseam expert, Biľak became actively involved in the communist movement in 1936, marking the beginning of a long and controversial political career.

Throughout his political journey, Biľak held several significant positions within the Communist Party of Slovakia and the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. He served as a member of the Central Committee from nineteen fifty-five to nineteen sixty-eight and again from nineteen sixty-nine to nineteen seventy-one. Notably, he was the secretary of the Central Committee from nineteen sixty-two to nineteen sixty-eight and briefly held the position of General Secretary in nineteen sixty-eight.

Biľak was a staunch supporter of the Soviet invasion during the Prague Spring and played a crucial role in the normalization process that followed. His influence extended to foreign policy and party ideology, particularly during his tenure as a secretary of the Central Committee from nineteen sixty-eight to nineteen eighty-eight. He was also a member of the National Assembly from nineteen sixty to nineteen eighty-nine.

In December nineteen eighty-nine, Biľak was suspended from the Communist Party, facing charges of treason related to his invitation to Warsaw Pact countries for military intervention in Czechoslovakia. Despite attempts to seek amnesty, he remained a controversial figure until his death on February 6, 2014, in Bratislava, at the age of ninety-six, marking the end of an era as he was the last of the original 'Tankies' to pass away.
